Speech Therapy

Speech therapy can help a client improve their speech or swallowing and can also assist a client with dementia by improving their short and long-term memory. Common diagnoses that speech therapists see are stroke victims with dysphasia, aphasia or early to mid-stage dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease.

Symptoms that may indicate need for Speech Therapy

  • Slurred, unclear, or speech inappropriate to situation
  • Lips or mouth droop on either side or patient drools
  • Inability to eat regular table food or swallow medications
  • Difficulty following directions and allowing family to answer questions
  • Inability to think of correct word, names or items
  • Hoarse or breathy quality of voice; inappropriate high or low volume
  • Change in mental status affectiving ADL’s, medication compliance
